Birmingham Youth Theatre
Our 31 Year History 1987 - 2018
Formed in 1987, BYT was founded by Alan Hackett, the then Chairman of Birmingham Musical and Operatic Society (BMOS). BMOS Youtheatre was created to meet the needs of the junior section of the theatre group, their first production was ‘A Broadway Melody’.
The Old Rep became the show venue from 1989 with productions in May and November. In 1991, Alan Hackett was introduced to Vic Little, trustee of the Lilley Johnson Charitable Trust. The Trust agreed to be and continue as sponsors for each of the productions.
Over the years, the Youtheatre performed many successful shows and pantomimes, including Midland premieres of Les Misérables (school edition) in 2006 and High School Musical in 2007.
Following a very successful ‘Musical Extravaganza’ to celebrate its 25th anniversary, BMOS Youtheatre was re-launched as Birmingham Youth Theatre in 2013. We continue to stage award winning performances such as Bugsy Malone, Sweet Charity, Cinderella and more recently Aladdin.
Indeed, the valued support of parents of Members taking on the roles of Wardrobe, Registrar, Ticket Bookings, Props, Stage Crew, and many other roles, ensures that Birmingham Youth Theatre goes from strength to strength.
